Our Mission

Our Mission

Our Mission

To address the gap in the history of Greeley we must tell our story of Mexican American intellectual, economic, and cultural impacts, for the benefit of the community at large.

Our Vision

Our Mission

Our Mission

Our vision is that knowing and valuing the history, culture, and contributions of Mexican Americans in Greeley will be commonplace for all the city’s residents.

Our Purpose

Our Mission

Our Purpose

To document a complete, rich Mexican American history with our voices and perspectives.

Origin of MAHPG

Why We are Excited about MAHPG

Why We are Excited about MAHPG

  •  In May of 2021, Dr. Andres Guerrero and Emma Peña-McCleave had a telephone conversation on how to address a major gap in knowledge about the history of Greeley. Namely the history, culture, and contributions of Mexican Americans and how we Mexican Americans might provide a documented history. Due to a family circumstance in September of 2021, Dr. Guerrero was called out of state and thus was unable to continue with this effort.

  • In November of 2021, Emma Pena-McCleave met separately with- Juanita Martinez Rocha, Daniel Reyez, Sarah Saxe, and Teresa Solis to gauge their interest in forming a committee to document the history, culture, and contributions of Greeley's Mexican Americans from a uniquely Mexican American perspective.

  • On December 8, 2021, the group decided to call itself the "Latino History Project" and would consist of nine to twelve dedicated community members who had lived in Greeley, knew it's history, and wanted to address an important gap in Greeley's story. By June of 2022, there were nine members. The name of the group evolved and is now formally the Mexican American History Project Greeley as of March 2022.

Why We are Excited about MAHPG

Why We are Excited about MAHPG

Why We are Excited about MAHPG

  • No one has written a book about Greeley Mexican Americans based on oral histories.

  • The narrations will be from the voices and perspectives of Mexican Americans themselves.

  • The oral histories will reveal, for the first time, what terms Mexican Americans prefer to describe their ethnicity.

  • Most of those leading the MAHPG are bicultural/bilingual; such lived experience is invaluable for reaching out to Greeley’s Mexican American residents and earning their trust.

  • You may wonder why our focus is on Mexican Americans and not all Latinx groups in Greeley. We felt it was ethically and scientifically necessary to focus on the Latinx group to which most of the Committee members belong. In addition, different Latinx groups have different life experiences, especially in education, depending on how their group originally “became part of” the U. S.
